The Fellowship depends on the financial support of members and friends to pay the monthly bills. In addition, we share responsibility; once the budget is met, the plate is shared with a variety of community projects. We are a teaching congregation; the addition of a minister-in-training allows us to expand programs and fulfils a mission to further UU. We are working to improve our community and the world in many ways.
Of course, there is a huge role for contribution of time and talent. But like any community or household, the budget must be managed and met.
Pledging
Members make an annual pledge to the fellowship. Last year, there were approximately 250 pledging members. The average pledge was a little over $900. This comprises most of the Fellowship's income; the rest is derived from rent of the facilities to other organizations and some fund-raising events.
The majority of the expenditure of the Fellowship (56% last year) is on salaries and benefits. Facilities, loan payments, and UUA dues ($74) account for another 32%. Administration, including printing, postage, and phones, accounts for 9%, leaving 4% for programs including music, child care, and social justice.
If the income were to be entirely derived from pledging (which would free the fund-raising to focus on social and other causes), the pledge per individual adult member should be $1330 ($2660 for an adult couple). This can be seen as the "fair share" number. Pledges can be honored at once, quarterly, monthly, or by irregular payments.
$1330 represents 3% of income for an individual earning $40,000, so is not unreasonable as a "tithe". There is of course provision for members who cannot afford the pledge to receive a waiver for any particular year, and all pledging is voluntary.
