Our History
Starting in 1961 a steering committee was set up to explore the possibility of establishing a Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Arthur Niles was chairman, and seven others served on the committee. On September 21, 1962 the first roster of officers was completed; by-laws were adopted, and a group of 22 authorized the president to apply for membership in the Unitarian Universalist Association. The UUA replied on Sept. 27 and welcomed the Fellowship as the 390th affiliated congregation as of our first worship service on Oct. 14. Seventeen persons became charter members. In 1966-1967 a church building was acquired and a minister hired.
A gala day in the Fellowship’s history was the dedication of our first home at 162 W. Palmetto Park Rd. on Nov. 13, 1966.
Other milestones include:
- Establishment of the Florence Fuller Day Care Center for families of Pearl City, an historically Black community.
- In 1982, land was purchased on St. Andrews Blvd., and construction began in 1984.
- In 2006 we began our Share-the-Plate Program.
