Dressed to Protest

Wear a Robe Day 2026 with Erich Landstrom

From ancient times to modern movements, from hairshirts to pussy hats, people of faith and conscience have worn clothing to make the fight for just treatment visible. Join us Sunday, March 22nd for our annual WEAR A ROBE DAY service tracing the surprising history of protest through what people wear — from Biblical Nehemiah shaking out his robe, to inflatable frog costumes today. We’ll explore how symbolic clothing can speak truth to power and how our Unitarian Universalist values call us to show up clad courageously. Justice doesn’t just live in our words — sometimes, it lives in our wardrobe.

Come as you are, or dressed to protest! Because this week is the Nehemiah Action Assembly with PEACE PBC on Tuesday evening, March 24th, the No Kings Protest with Palm Beach Indivisible on Saturday morning, March 28th, and the Palm Beach Pride Parade in Lake Worth Beach on Sunday morning, March 29th.

👘 Why wear a robe to church on Sunday? The action follows the example from the Hebrew Bible where Nehemiah gathers the “great assembly” to bring justice to his community after hearing about its economic exploitation (Neh 5:1-13).

Neh 5:13 “Moreover, I shook out the folds of my robe and said, ‘May God shake out anyone who breaks this promise, brushed off just like this robe and leaving them empty–until there’s nothing left.’ And everyone said, ‘Amen,’ and followed through on their word.”

Whether it’s a cozy bathrobe, a beach-ready pool robe, or a proud graduation robe — we wear it as a symbol of comfort, celebration, and commitment to justice. And to remember to be at PEACE (People Engaged in Active Community Efforts) as we stand together for Nehemiah Action Assembly.
